Ex-Gamecocks linebacker leaving program for high school head coaching job
A familiar name is leaving the South Carolina football staff.
Ex-Gamecocks star DeVonte Holloman, who spent the past season in an off the field role under Shane Beamer, is leaving the program to become the next head coach at Pinewood Prep in Summerville. The school announced his hire Tuesday morning.
Holloman replaces JW Myers, who announced last month that he was stepping down as head coach. Myers is staying on as the school’s athletic director.
“We are ecstatic to welcome Coach Holloman and his family to the Panther community. He has won at every level and will undoubtedly lead Pinewood’s football program to new heights,” Pinewood’s Head of School, Dr. Dan Seiden Seiden said in a release.
Holloman starred at South Carolina between 2009 and 2012, helping the Gamecocks to a pair of 11-win seasons as a junior and senior. He was later selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, but was forced to retire shortly thereafter due to injury.
Following his playing career, Holloman worked as a graduate assistant at South Carolina for a season, before landing on staff at Beaufort High School, eventually becoming the head football coach in 2018.
Holloman had been the head coach at South Pointe for three seasons prior to stepping down last year. He was the first Black head football coach to lead any of Rock Hill’s three high schools and won a state title his final year at South Pointe.
South Carolina has had a number of lower level staffers shift into new roles this season outside the program. Offensive analysts Nick Coleman (Quarterbacks coach, UAB) and Christian Ellsworth (Analyst, Nebraska) both moved on to new schools. Special teams analayst Stanton Weber, who worked closely with assistant coach Pete Lembo during his time in Columbia, was also hired as the special teams coordinator at Toledo.
