What Dawn Staley said about Aliyah Boston injury, status

Dawn Staley gave an update to Aliyah Boston’s right foot injury on Sunday after the 85-38 win against Hampton.

The South Carolina women’s basketball senior is “questionable” for the Gamecocks’ next game (Tuesday vs. UCLA), Staley told reporters. She added that there was not much concern from the team doctor after they checked on Boston.

Boston — the reigning National Player of the Year — has not missed a game in her career at South Carolina. She was wearing a boot on her right foot after the injury.

“She’s gonna get it looked at (Monday),” Staley said. “Our doctor wasn’t too concerned, but we just want to be on the safe side.”

Boston got hurt in the second quarter Sunday after cutting to the rim and then falling after a foul by a Hampton defender.

She was slow to get up but was able to shoot both free throws. Staley immediately sent Ashyln Watkins to the scorers table and took Boston out of the game.

Boston didn’t join the team in the layup lines after halftime. She came back to the bench midway through the third quarter wearing a boot. She was able to stand without crutches during the team’s post-third quarter huddle.

She walked around on her own power after the game, mingling with fans as she normally would.

Laeticia Amihere started the second half in Boston’s place. Amihere said that she thinks Boston will be “fine” for the team’s game against the Bruins on Tuesday.

“It’s always tough to see somebody go down,” Amihere said. “So definitely prayers up for her.”
