Jonathan and Harold Goodwin don’t get a lot of time to spend together. That’s not the case this week.

The two former Lower Richland High School standouts were back in Columbia and attended the final South Carolina 7-on-7 camp Friday.

Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints, is in his third year as offensive line coach at Providence Day School in Charlotte. Providence Day was playing in the Shane Beamer 7-on-7 event and had few offensive linemen at USC’s offensive and defensive line camp.

Harold Goodwin had some time off as the running game coordinator and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so he made a trip back to South Carolina to be with his family.

“My mom rarely gets to have both of us in town at the same time,” Jonathan Goodwin said. “So she got to see her sons and her grandsons. It is a good thing to get the family all together.”

Jonathan Goodwin was a standout at Michigan before playing in the NFL for 13 seasons. Channing Goodwin, his oldest son, is a standout receiver for Providence Day and is a Division I prospect.

Goodwin had 42 catches for 690 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore in 2021. Some of his offers include Michigan, Kentucky, North Carolina State, Boston College, Missouri, West Virginia and Virginia Tech. South Carolina has yet to offer but has shown interest.

Jonathan Goodwin said it’s fun to watch his son going through the recruiting process.

“Recruiting is way different than when I was coming up,” Jonathan Goodwin said. “So it has been eye opening, but he’s still got plenty of time.

“Overall it is a good thing. I get to be a coach and see my son play. So, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Gamecock coaches with eyes on Providence Day

USC coaches saw plenty of action involving Providence Day School on Friday.

Multiple USC coaches were at each 7-on-7 game featuring the private school. The team coached by former Oceanside Collegiate coach Chad Grier boasts several Division I prospects including five-star Class of 2024 quarterback Jadyn Davis, who is the No. 3 ranked quarterback in the country by 247Sports Composite.

In addition to Davis, other Class of 2024 players with Power 5 offers include receivers Goodwin and Jordan Shipp, and safety Brody Barnhardt. USC receivers coach Justin Stepp spent a lot of time talking to Shipp and Goodwin and their families after the 7-on-7 event wrapped up.

Class of 2023 defensive back Chris Peale has a USC offer, and defensive backs coach Torrian Gray was watching closely on Friday.

Class of 2025 offensive lineman David Sanders attended the OL-DL camp and already has a USC offer. The 6-foot-7 lineman should be one of the top linemen in the country for his recruiting class.

Jadyn Davis getting close to trimming list

Jadyn Davis, a rising junior, said Friday he likely will announce his top schools sometime in July.

The five-star quarterback spent the early part of June taking unofficial visits to Michigan, LSU, Clemson and Georgia.

“It was a great experience at all those universities,” Davis said Friday. “I wanted to see schools I hadn’t seen before. It was a great experience going places with my dad and spending time with him.”

Davis said he still hears from USC and hears from Clemson quite a bit. He probably will visit Tennessee, Penn State and Michigan later this summer, he said.

“Recruiting is a good problem to have. It is nothing but a blessing,” Davis said. “And at the end of the day, it is a business decision and you got to choose the best place for me and my family.”

Davis played the last two seasons at Catawba Ridge High School in South Carolina before transferring back to Providence Day, where he attended middle school.

Coach ‘Uncle Luke’ Luther Campbell at USC

Former 2 Live Crew front man Luther Campbell aka “Uncle Luke” was on campus Friday.

The former rapper is in his fifth season as head football coach of Miami Edison High School. Miami Edison went 7-5 last season and lost in the second round of the playoffs.

Miami Edison made it to the final four of Friday’s 7-on-7 event and has Division I prospects that include former Clemson commit Nathaniel Joseph.

Joseph wasn’t there on Friday while he takes an official visit with Miami. That comes a week after visiting Louisville.

Noah Jenkins picks up USC offer

Highland Springs (Virginia) Class of 2024 WR/DB Noah Jenkins picked up an offer from the Gamecocks on Friday after the camp wrapped up.

Jenkins’ teammate Braylon Johnson, a Class of 2023 defensive back, is a Gamecock prospect and took an official visit to USC earlier this month.

QB Dante Reno back in town

Four-star Class of 2024 quarterback prospect Dante Reno posted on his Twitter account that he will be back at USC for a visit this weekend.

The Massachusetts native has visited USC several times, including earlier this month.

7-on-7 winners

S.C. Class 4A champion South Pointe High won the Shane Beamer 7-on-7 championship on Friday. The Stallions defeated Highland Springs 16-15 in the championship.

Former South Pointe coach DeVonte Holloman, who led the Stallions to the state championship last year, was there to watch his former team play. Holloman joined the USC coaching staff as an analyst.
