Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks add third commit of the weekend

South Carolina football added its third public commitment Sunday.

Class of 2023 safety Cam Upshaw of Taylor County in Perry, Florida., committed to Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks. Upshaw took an official visit to USC this weekend.

Upshaw is the fifth commitment for the class of 2023 and third on Sunday, with Beamer hinting on Twitter that another commitment is on the way.

Upshaw picked the Gamecocks over Arkansas, Maryland, Florida State and Nebraska. Those schools along with the Gamecocks were his final five schools he announced on May 26.

247Sports Composite ranks Upshaw as a three-star prospect. He took an unofficial visit to USC in January.

“The facilities are extremely nice, and I went to see the locker room and it’s beautiful,” Upshaw told Phil Kornblut back in January. “And the field, from the outside you can tell it’s real big. Once you get in, it’s still big but you’re close to the fans. I like the city. When we first got in, I was like, this is for me. I could see myself living here for three to four years and playing football there.”

Upshaw played last season at Gadsen County High School where he saw time at quarterback and and on defense where he is being recruited to play for the Gamecocks. He had tackles and an interception.

On offense, he threw for 490 yards, six touchdowns and also ran for 268 yards and a TD.

USC hosted 13 players on official visits this weekend. In addition to the announced commitments, two more S Jalen Kilgore and QB Dylan Lonegran announced their commitment dates.

Kilgore will announce on Wednesday and Lonegran on July 5. 247Sports crystal ball predictions have both of them picking the Gamecocks.
