Early point spread released for South Carolina’s first football game of 2022
There are 15 weeks remaining before South Carolina football debuts for 2022, but an early point spread has already started to circulate for that first game.
The Gamecocks are favored by 11 points in their season opener against the Georgia State Panthers, according to sportsbetting.ag. The game will be held Sept. 3 at Williams-Brice Stadium, with time and TV details expected to be announced this coming week.
The Gamecocks are 19-3 in their last 22 season openers and defeated Eastern Illinois 46-0 in last year’s first game, the first of Shane Beamer’s career at South Carolina.
Georgia State has tasted success against SEC opponents before, upsetting Tennessee in 2019 and keeping it close with Auburn despite a loss in 2021.
Georgia State went 8-5 in 2021 with a Camellia Bowl win over Ball State. South Carolina outperformed preseason expectations in 2021, slated by many in the preseason to win three or four games and finishing the year 7-6 with a Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina.
Storylines for South Carolina’s first game will be rich. Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott spent seven seasons at USC before heading to the Panthers’ Sun Belt program. He worked as a co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach under Will Muschamp and Steve Spurrier, taking over in 2015 as interim head coach after Spurrier’s departure.
The Gamecocks will also see the on-field debut of former Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, as well as fellow former sooner Austin Stogner and transfer portal additions that include former Wake Forest running back Christian Beal-Smith and standout James Madison receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells.
