Former South Carolina standout DeVonte Holloman’s hire doesn’t appear to be imminent, at least for the time being.

Holloman, who was expected to accept a job on Shane Beamer’s staff in a report from On3.com’s Matt Zenitz, has not been offered a job of yet, Beamer said Thursday during an appearance on the “JB and Goldwater” radio show.

“DeVonte is somebody that I have a lot of respect for,” Beamer said. “I won’t lie, I’ve had some conversations with DeVonte, but have not offered DeVonte anything at this point.”

If Holloman is hired, it could come in a handful of different roles — whether that be as an graduate assistant, analyst or in another off-the-field role — depending on what’s allowed under NCAA rules.

The biggest snag in bringing Holloman aboard centers around an NCAA rule established in 2017 that prevented the hiring of anyone associated with a potential recruit in an off-the-field capacity within two years of the prospect’s signing.

During his recent run as the head coach at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, Holloman coached South Carolina receiver O’Mega Blake — who signed with USC in December 2020.

Holloman starred as a linebacker at South Carolina under Steve Spurrier from 2009 and 2012. He was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, but a neck injury forced him to retire prematurely.

Following his stint at the professional level, Holloman worked as a graduate assistant at USC before landing an assistant coaching job at Beaufort High School. He was eventually named the head coach at Beaufort in 2018.

Holloman was the head coach at South Pointe for three seasons. He later announced he was stepping down from the position last week.

South Carolina should be full as far as on-field coaching positions after the departures of outside linebackers/defensive ends coach Mike Peterson and tight ends coach Erik Kimrey. Peterson was replaced by Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Sterling Lucas, while former Alabama and New York Giants assistant Jody Wright will reportedly fill Kimrey’s spot — though that hiring has not been made official.

It’s conceivable Holloman could move into the role vacated by legendary South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw, who departed the program earlier this month. Shaw served as USC’s director of football relations under both Beamer and former head coach Will Muschamp.
