Gamecocks football has four positives in latest round of COVID-19 testing

South Carolina football had four positives in its latest round of COVID-19 testing.

Will Muschamp announced the news on his weekly appearance on the Carolina Calls radio show Thursday evening. He cautioned against blaming it on irresponsible behavior.

“Like I said before, you can be very responsible during this time but still get it,” he said. “It’s a very contagious virus, so I think our guys are doing a very good job. It’s been unfortunate, but it is very contagious.”

The team had its numbers drop about to zero at points during the lead-up to camp.

The return to classes has seen more than 1,000 new cases on campus.

“That’s less than one percent (positive),” Muschamp said. “You look at our state, it’s up from anywhere to 15-18 percent, depending on the day. On campus, it’s over 10 percent of the ratio of positives, so our guys are doing a great job.”

Freshman tailback MarShawn Lloyd should have surgery for a torn ACL next week, Muschamp said.

South Carolina kicks off the 2020 season Sept. 26 with a home game against Tennessee.
