Where two Gamecocks transfers landed for the 2020 season
Transfers are a fact of life in college football. There’s only so much playing time. Guys for one reason or another don’t see the progress they want, look for a fresh start.
The COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic seemed to have slowed some departures from South Carolina’s roster, perhaps along with new NCAA restrictions. Some of the departures included kicker Alex Woznick and offensive lineman Jordon Carty, and both have managed to find new homes.
Carty left the program soon after the 2019 season concluded and signed with Bethune-Cookman in Florida in February. Woznick’s name surfaced in the transfer portal in April and he is now at Eastern Kentucky.
One other transfer, offensive lineman Summie Carlay, landed at The Citadel as well.
Carty did not play across three seasons. The 6-foot-7, 310 pounder was a raw project, a late add in a 2017 cycle that saw Eric Wolford replace Shawn Elliott in leading the offensive line. Carty is a South Florida product and landed with a program a few hours up Florida’s east coast with a program that went 7-4 last season and will not play this fall.
Woznick was the heir apparent to Elliott Fry, the program’s all-time leading scorer. He took over at the start of the 2017 season, but struggled against Kentucky with a missed extra point and missed 42 yarder (he also missed from 33 against Missouri). Parker White took over the job and has held it since. Woznick kicked off occasionally but never had a truly settled role.
He joins a team that went 7-5 last season and lost senior kicker Sam Hayworth. EKU’s conference has not canceled the fall season, but did delay it.
The Gamecocks roster has seen a bit less offseason attrition than in past years. Part of that might be the pandemic and part might be the NCAA’s 25-man signing limit coming into play. The Gamecocks are set to have to borrow four scholarships against the 2021 class to get the roster to 85 for the 2020 season.
A few players who left the team during the season and landed with other schools:
▪ Jamyest Williams - Georgia State
▪ Derek Boykins - Charlotte
▪ Evan Hinson - Austin Peay (for basketball)
