How one Gamecocks commit plans to go forward with his senior season moved to spring
One of South Carolina football’s 2021 recruits won’t be playing his senior year of high school.
Three-star linebacker commit Bryce Steele confirmed to The State on Wednesday he is skipping his senior season of football and will enroll in January at South Carolina.
On Wednesday, North Carolina High School Association announced it was moving high school football season to February because of the coronavirus pandemic. The other Gamecock pledge affected is defensive tackle Nick Barrett.
“I figured that NC was going to push the season back so,” Steele said. “I’ll be training here in NC and Maryland-Virginia area to get ready for college ball.”
Steele was moving back to NC for his senior year and playing at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, N.C. He played at Episcopal High School in Richmond, Va., last year but announced last month he was returning to his hometown in NC to play his senior year. Virginia also announced it will be playing football in the spring.
Steele is one of two USC commits from NC. Defensive tackle Nick Barrett of Eastern Wayne High in Goldsboro is the other.
Steele missed last season after surgery to remove a benign mass from his chest. In 2018, he had 43 tackles and six as a sophomore.
Steele committed to South Carolina in April.
“I’ve been back at 100 percent and striving to get better for the past six months. And just because there’s no season doesn’t mean the grind will stop,” Steele said. “Actually now that I won’t be playing I have even more time to prepare for the next level.”
