Callawassie Island to remain Big East championship venue through 2022

Callawassie Island will remain the home of the Big East golf championships through at least 2022, reaching agreement on a five-year extension to stage both men’s and women’s tournaments on the club’s award-winning Tom Fazio designs.

The Big East men’s tournament has been played at Callawassie Island since 2014, with the women’s tournament joining the lineup this past spring.

“Callawassie Island Golf Club has been a great home for Big East golf for the past three years,” said Chris Schneider, the league’s associate commissioner for Olympic sports. “The course itself is one of the top courses that our athletes play on all year and it makes for an outstanding setting for the championships.

“However, Callawassie is much more than just an exceptional course. It is the professional staff and members that have made our past championships so memorable.”

Last spring, Seton Hall became the first women’s team to capture three straight Big East crowns, posting a 12-stroke romp over Georgetown. The Hoyas were wire-to-wire victors for the men’s championship, outpacing Xavier by 27 shots.

The 2017 women’s tournament will tee off at Callawassie Island next April 20, with the men’s event to follow starting April 29.
