Beaufort’s Benji Gecy selected to Coker’s all-time baseball team
Beaufort’s Benji Gecy has been chosen as one of 15 members to Coker College’s all-time baseball team, with longtime Cobras coach Dave Schmotzer naming him as his top shortstop over three decades leading the program.
Gecy batted .312 during his junior season in 1995 with 49 runs scored and 20 stolen bases, then followed it up with a .350 average, 45 runs scored and 28 steals as a senior.
His 49 runs scored and 28 stolen bases both rank among the school’s top 10 seasons in those categories.
Gecy more recently has shown his prowess on the area’s golf courses, as a frequent contender in local amateur events.
Coker unveiled its all-time baseball and men’s basketball teams this week to salute Schmotzer and his brother, Dan, who both retired last summer after longtime service to Cobras athletics.
Festivities also included renaming the baseball field and basketball court in their honor.
