Sun Belt defensive tackle commits to Clemson football out of transfer portal
Clemson football is adding depth to its defensive line through the transfer portal with the late addition of a Sun Belt Conference transfer.
Former Texas State defensive tackle Devarrick Woods announced a commitment to Dabo Swinney and the Tigers on Tuesday night. Other schools in the mix for Woods included Florida, Florida State and Kansas State, per On3 Sports.
Woods (6-3, 290) played in 11 games for Texas State last year and recorded 16 tackles. 2.0 tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry.
He was previously an all-conference player at Hinds Community College, a JUCO in Mississippi where he started his college football career.
Clemson has now added 12 transfer portal players this cycle.
Woods was listed as a redshirt junior on Texas State’s roster last year and was recently granted a final year of college eligibility from the NCAA for 2026-27, per his social media. He’d been visiting schools in recent weeks.
He projects as a depth option for Swinney and Clemson, who lost their top three defensive tackles from 2025 (Peter Woods, DeMonte Capehart and Stephiylan Green) to either the NFL Draft or the transfer portal.
Adding Woods also makes sense in context of Clemson defensive tackle Kourtney Kelly (a Division II West Georgia transfer) tearing his ACL during 2026 spring practice. Kelly’s recovery timeline is unclear, and in a best-case scenario he probably wouldn’t be available to play for the Tigers until mid-season.
Woods’ commitment takes Clemson up to 103 scholarship players. The NCAA limit for football scholarship players is 105; Clemson would move up to 104 players if transfer wide receiver Tristan Smith is ruled eligible later this summer.
