Clemson football won’t participate in popular 2026 fan event. Here’s why
For years, the Clemson football program has collaborated with a local alumni club to host the Recruiting Wrap Up event around national signing day in early February.
The Fort Hill Clemson Club even promotes the fundraiser — which usually features a panel with coach Dabo Swinney, that year’s incoming freshman class and other new Tigers coaches and players — as its “signature event” on its website.
But the event won’t happen in 2026, and the reasoning is interesting for a program that’s coming off a 7-6 season and could see major changes this offseason.
A representative for the Fort Hill Clemson Club confirmed to The State on Monday that Clemson football won’t participate in this year’s event “due to several issues, primarily the challenges with timing of the event falling so close to the end of football season along with the bustle of January activities.”
An internal email, first reported by the Post & Courier and also obtained by The State, sheds further light on the decision. In an email addressed to Fort Hill Clemson Club sponsors, a representative for the local club wrote:
“I regret to inform you that due to circumstances beyond our control, The Fort Hill Clemson Club will not hold our 2026 Recruiting Wrap Up scheduled for this coming year. The football office notified us ... that there were too many challenges with NIL, new portal window dates and staff changes to allow participation in this event.”
The Recruiting Wrap Up event and Clemson
The Recruiting Wrap Up event had been held 18 years in a row. Last year’s event was held on Feb. 5, 2025 at Clemson’s Poe Indoor Practice Facility and featured a panel and Q&A sessions with Swinney, new defensive coordinator Tom Allen, the team’s 2025 signing class and its three transfer portal commitments.
The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Fort Hill Clemson Club, which provides need-based scholarships to local students attending Clemson. The club has raised $1.2 million and given out 350-plus scholarships since 2007.
But the Recruiting Wrap Up now intersects with a key stretch for Clemson football and Swinney. The NCAA moved its football transfer portal window from December to January last year, and the new portal window runs Jan. 2-16, 2026.
Those are the only 14 days when a player can enter the portal, but players can commit to a school at any point afterward. Clemson, which has used the portal minimally in recent seasons, figures to be more involved than ever, especially on defense, where Allen has made it known he wants reinforcements.
The 2025-26 NCAA recruiting calendar includes a “quiet period” (where on-campus visits are allowed) from Jan 1-4, 2026. Jan. 5-31, 2026 is a “contact period” where coaches can contact and speak with transfers, and there’s another quiet period where visits are allowed Jan. 11. Swinney alluded to this on Saturday.
“Obviously, the portal opens on the 2nd so we’ll have some recruiting we’ve got to do there,” Swinney said after Clemson’s 22-10 Pinstripe Bowl loss to Penn State.
January is also a key month for player retention and revenue-sharing contract negotiations, as well as staff movement. Clemson analyst John Grass has moved onto FCS Samford as the school’s next football coach and is taking a number of Tigers support staffers with him to Alabama, including Dabo’s son Drew Swinney.
That’ll leave various roles within the program for Swinney to fill. Clemson has not parted ways with any lead assistant coaches as of Monday, but Swinney hasn’t exactly shot down the possibility of further staff changes after a disappointing year.
Will Recruiting Wrap Up return in 2027?
The 2026 Recruiting Wrap Up hadn’t been formally advertised online with a specific date. An internal email from the club indicated a Clemson football representative informed the club some time last week (Dec. 22-26) they couldn’t participate.
Leslie Callison of the Fort Hill Clemson Club told The State that the club would inform members and area alumni of the event’s cancellation next week. She added that the club was “very grateful” for its partnership with Clemson football.
It’s unclear whether the event will return in 2027 or future years.
“Our Board will meet early January to discuss pivoting to a different fundraiser to continue our efforts of supporting these deserving students,” Callison said via email.
