Clemson vs Notre Dame live updates: Irish snap Tigers’ winning streak in OT thriller

No. 1 Clemson faces No. 4 Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on NBC. The State’s Matt Connolly is inside Notre Dame Stadium to report on the game. Follow our news and score updates here.

Final: Notre Dame 47, Clemson (2 OT)

Notre Dame hands Clemson its first regular-season loss since 2017 when the Tigers lost to Syracuse.

The two teams combined for 992 yards of offense.

Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei threw for 439 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Williams TD: Notre Dame 47, Clemson 40

Kyren Williams gives the Irish the lead in double overtime on a 3-yard run.

During the drive, Clemson freshman defensive lineman Bryan Bresee left the game with an injury.

Williams TD: Clemson 40, Notre Dame 40

Kyren Williams’ second TD run of the game, a 3-yarder sends the game into double overtime.

Williams has 143 yards in the game.

Uiagalelei TD: Clemson 40, Notre Dame 33

DJ Uiagalelei scored on a 1-yard run on the second play of overtime to give the Tigers a lead.

On the first play of overtime, Uiagalelei finds Cornell Powell on a 24-yard pass. Uiagalelei has thrown for 426 yards and and two TDs. Powell has six catches for 161 yards.

According to ESPN Stats Info, Uiagalelei’s 426 passing yards are the most ever against Notre Dame surpassing former Southern Call quarterback Carson Palmer’s mark of 425 in 2002.

Davis TD: Clemson 33, Notre Dame 33

In a must-score drive, Notre Dame tied it up on Ian Book’s 4-yard pass to Avery Davis with 22 seconds left.

Book and Davis hooked up earlier in the possession on a 53-yard pass to get it to the Tigers’ 4-yard line.

Etienne TD: Clemson 33, Notre Dame 26

Travis Etienne’s 3-yard TD run gives Clemson first lead of the night with 3:33 left in the game.

It was a 12-play, 74 yard drive, the Tigers’ third scoring drive of 10 plays or more.

Potter FG: Clemson 26 Notre Dame 26

Clemson answered Notre Dame’s score with BT Potter’s fourth field goal of the game, a 30-yarder with 9:42 left.

It was first time in Potter’s career he has kicked four field goals in a game. Potter is the first Clemson kicker to record four field goals in a game since Chandler Catanzaro in 2013.

The Tigers’ drive was set up by DJ Uiagalelei’s 51-yard strike to Cornell Powell to the Notre Dame 20. Powell has four catches for 122 yards in the game.

Doerer FG: Notre Dame 26, Clemson 23

Jonathan Doerer’s fourth field goal of the game gives the Irish the lead again with 11:37 left.

The big play of the drive came on Ian Book’s 29-yard pass to tight end Michael Mayer down to the Clemson 29.

Clemson defense comes up with big turnover

Notre Dame looked to be going in for go-ahead score but Clemson’s Jake Venables stripped Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book and Baylon Spector recovers in the end zone to keep the score tied at 23 going into the fourth quarter.

Allen TD: Clemson 23, Notre Dame 23

Clemson has dominated the second half and scored for the second time in the quarter when DJ Uiagalelei found Davis Allen on a 10-yard TD pass with 4:12 left in the third quarter.

Clemson has run 23 plays in the quarter and Notre Dame just three.

Potter FG: Notre Dame 23, Clemson 16

Clemson opens the second half with another BT Potter field goal. The former South Pointe standout hit a 46-yarder with 12:16 left in the third quarter. It is the second time this season Potter has kicked three field goals in a game with the other coming against Wake Forest in the opener.

On that drive, Clemson offensive lineman Matt Brockhorst left the game and was replaced by Mason Trotter.

Potter FG: Notre Dame 23, Clemson 13

BT Potter kicks his second field goal of the half, a 45-yarder with 1:09 left in the second quarter. Clemson needed the points after committing turnovers on the previous two possessions.

Doerer FG: Notre Dame 23, Clemson 10

The Irish took advantage of Clemson’s second straight turnover as Jonathan Doerer hit a 45-yard field goal with 2:41 left in second quarter.

The scoring drive was set up after Clemson receiver Amari Rodgers fumbled at the 27-yard line.

Owusu-Koramoah TD: Notre Dame 20, Clemson 10

For the second straight week, a Travis Etienne fumble resulted in an opponent’s touchdown. DJ Uiagalelei’s pitch bounced off Etienne’s shoulder right to Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who took it 23 yards for a TD.

It looked like Owusu-Koramoah was down at the 1 according to NBC analyst Terry McAuley but it wasn’t reviewed.

Potter FG: Notre Dame 13, Clemson 10

Clemson scores on its second straight drive as BT Potter hits a 25-yard field goal with 8:32 left in the second quarter. Amari Rodgers was a big factor on the drive with three catches for 78 yards.

Doerer FG: Notre Dame 13, Clemson 7

Notre Dame has scored on all three drives as Jonathan Doerer hits a 27-yard field goal. Irish quarterback Ian Book is 5-of-7 for 71 yards in the game.

Powell TD: Notre Dame 10, Clemson 7

After a three and out on the first drive, the Tigers respond with a touchdown as DJ Uiagalelei hit Cornell Powell on a 53-yard touchdown pass with 4:11 left in the first quarter.

Doerer FG: Notre Dame 10, Clemson 0

The Irish score on their second drive of the game on Jonathan Doerer’s 24-yard FG with 5:55 left in first quarter. The big play in the drive was Ian Book’s 28-yard pass to Javon McKinley down to Clemson 25.

It was the longest catch of Powell’s career.

Williams TD: Notre Dame 7, Clemson 0

Notre Dame wasted no time in scoring. On the first play of the game, Kyren Williams scored on a 65-yard TD run. Second straight game Clemson has trailed in this season. According to ESPN Stats and Info, it was the first time in the last 15 seasons that Clemson allowed a TD on its first defensive play.

Channel change during Biden’s speech

The Clemson Tigers and Notre Dame football game will move away from NBC when president-elect Joe Biden addresses the nation Saturday night.

The game — which has a 7:30 p.m. kickoff — will move from NBC to USA Network once Biden begins speaking. USA Network will begin showing the game at 7:55 p.m. It will be shown on both channels until Biden steps to the podium.

NBC will not leave the game until Biden steps to the podium and will return to the game once Biden’s speech is done.

Clemson releases inactive list

Clemson has released its inactive list for Saturday night’s game at Notre Dame.

There are no surprises on the list as all four starters who are out had already been ruled out prior to Saturday night.

The four starters who are out are — quarterback Trevor Lawrence, linebacker James Skalski, linebacker Mike Jones Jr. and defensive tackle Tyler Davis.

Clemson could only bring 80 players for the trip.

Trevor Lawrence makes trip

As expected, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence traveled with the team to Notre Dame and is on the sidelines for the game.

Lawrence, who tested positive for COVID-19,completed the required 10-day isolation period in time to travel but didn’t pass the cardiac requirements set by the Atlantic Coast Confeence.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Lawrence will act as another coach on the sidelines.

“He’s an incredibly knowledgeable guy and he’s been there,” Swinney said of Lawrence. “I think he’ll be able to bring a good presence to D.J. He’s got a great mind. He’s got great eyes. So he’s gonna be coach Lawrence.”

Tigers watch ‘Rudy’

On Friday’s before each game, Clemson players and coaches usually watch a movie.

The choice for this week was ‘Rudy’, the 1993 hit starring Sean Astin who played the role of famous Notre Dame football walk-on Rudy Ruettiger.
