NC State basketball’s AJ Taylor entering the transfer portal

N.C. State basketball coach Kevin Keatts said the 2020-21 roster is one of his deepest yet, but the Wolfpack is losing one redshirt junior reserve.

Forward A.J. Taylor, who played just three minutes last season, has entered the transfer portal, according to N.C. State.

Taylor (6-6, 205 pounds) transferred to N.C. State from Southwest Mississippi Community College, and grabbed two rebounds, blocked one shot and scored one point against Georgia Tech in the 2019-20 season opener.

He missed the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury.

Taylor, who’s from Davenport, Iowa, averaged 9.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 17 games. He also made 36.9 percent (17 of 46) of his 3-point shots at Southwest Mississippi.

With the return of senior forward D.J. Funderburk, junior wing Jericole Hellems and the additions of freshmen forwards Nick Farrar and Jaylon Gibson, it would have been a battle for Taylor at the forward spot.

The loss of Taylor opens up an additional 2021 scholarship for Keatts if he does transfer. He will remain on scholarship as long as he’s enrolled in school.
