Here’s why Bailey Hockman started at QB for NC State instead of Devin Leary
Almost an hour before N.C. State opened the season against Wake Forest, the school announced that Bailey Hockman, not Devin Leary, would be starting at quarterback.
Leary was named the starter heading into spring practice after starting the last five games of the 2019 season. According to The ACC Network, N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said Leary missed at least 20 days of practice during fall camp when he had to quarantine because of the coronavirus outbreak on campus. According to ACN, Doeren stressed that Leary was not beaten out. The Wolfpack just felt more comfortable going with Hockman, who got significantly more reps in camp.
Leary is available to play tonight, if needed.
Hockman started two games last season and appeared in seven, throwing for 546 yards and one score. Leary led the team with 1,219 yards and eight touchdowns.
Wolfpack senior wide receiver C.J. Riley was left off the list of players available for tonight’s game. Riley was not expected to start.
