Report: Florida State president thinks ACC’s fall football fate could be decided Thursday
A decision on if the ACC will play football this fall could be coming Thursday afternoon.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, Florida State president John Thrasher told the university’s board of trustees on Thursday that a meeting of school presidents and chancellors will take place today at 4:30 p.m. Thrasher believes a final decision will be made in regard to if the league will play this fall, according to The Times.
“I have every reason to believe it will be the final, final recognition of whether we play fall sports or not,” Thrasher told the board of trustees during Thursday’s meeting, according to The Times. “I have every reason to believe it will be a positive recognition.”
The college football landscape is watching and waiting for the next move from the ACC, SEC and Big 12. Earlier this week the Big Ten and Pac-12 postponed their fall sports.
It’s believed that the ACC wants to move forward and play. On Tuesday Dr. Cameron Wolfe, the chairman of the ACC’s medical advisory team, told the Sports Business Daily that he believes football can safely be played this season.
Wolfe, a Duke infectious disease specialist, expects the conference to try and play. Wolfe’s confidence comes from all the information doctors have gathered since COVID-19 put a halt to college sports in March.
“We believe we can mitigate it down to a level that makes everyone safe,” Wolfe told The Daily. “Can we safely have two teams meet on the field? I would say yes.”
Wolfe admitted to The Daily that it would be tough, expensive and require a lot of hard work, but is still optimistic.
The ACC football teams started practice last week and the league also released schedules days later.
