ACC joins movement that supports one-time transfer without penalty

News broke last month that the Big 10 had proposed legislation that would allow players in every sport to transfer once without being forced to sit out a year.

Now the Atlantic Coast Conference is joining the Big 10’s fight. The ACC announced Monday afternoon that it would be in support of a rule allowing players to transfer once without penalty.

The NCAA currently requires players to sit out one season when transferring in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball and hockey. The exception occurs only if a student-athlete has a waiver granted or is immediately eligible as a grad transfer.

“During the league’s annual winter meetings (February 12-14), the ACC discussed the transfer environment and unanimously concluded that as a matter of principle we support a one-time transfer opportunity for all student-athletes, regardless of sport,” Monday’s statement read. “As a conference, we look forward to continuing the discussion nationally.”

The soonest this rule could be adopted is 2021, according to a report from CBS.

With coaching salaries ballooning and coaches leaving for jobs at inopportune times (most recently Colorado’s Mel Tucker leaving for Michigan State after Signing Day earlier this month) there has been growing support for the NCAA to change its rules when it comes to players having the opportunity to transfer without penalty.
