Wolfpack Club executive director Bobby Purcell to retire in 2020
Bobby Purcell said Friday that he will retire as executive director of N.C. State’s Wolfpack Club in 2020, making the announcement as part of his annual end-of-year message to club members and Pack fans.
Purcell, executive director since 1991, has been a part of Wolfpack athletics since 1981. Before joining the Wolfpack Club and succeeding Charlie Bryant as executive director, he served on the football staffs of head coaches Tom Reed and Dick Sheridan.
Among Purcell’s accomplishments with the Wolfpack Club have been the $45 million Wolfpack Pride Campaign, the Campaign for N.C. State Students, the Goal Line Drive Campaign, the Batter Up Campaign, Advantage Wolfpack Campaign and the Building Futures Campaign.
Purcell, a senior associate athletic director at NCSU, also oversaw the construction of the Wendell Murphy Football Center and the C. Richard Vaughn Towers at Carter-Finley Stadium.
In his message to Wolfpack Club members and fans, posted on the Wolfpack Club’s Twitter account, Purcell said, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve you over all these years.” Purcell not say when he will retire but is expected to remain through June 30, 2020.
“Bobby Purcell has been synonymous with both the Wolfpack Club and N.C. State Athletics for over three decades,” Wolfpack athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a tweet. “He is a pioneer in his profession, has always put N.C. State’s best interests above his own and his profound impact cannot be overstated. Bobby is connected to every generation of Wolfpack Athletics and he has created a true legacy that will endure. We are grateful for all that Bobby has done and meant to N.C. State Athletics.”
Purcell served as National Association of Athletic Development Directors president in 2004-2005 and was named their University Division Fundraiser of the Year in 2007. He received its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
