Mack Brown and his assistant coaches get bonuses for UNC’s bowl bid

North Carolina coach Mack Brown made $75,000 in bonus money for being invited to the Military Bowl, according to the terms of his contract.

Brown’s contract states that if the football program receives an invite to any bowl game other than a New Year’s 6 Bowl game, Brown “will receive additional compensation from the University in the form of a bonus for increased responsibilities.”

Had the Tar Heels made it to a New Year’s 6 Bowl Game, Brown would have received $200,000. Brown’s contract lasts through January 2024. He makes $3.5 million a year, not including bonuses.

Brown’s 10 assistant coaches will also receive bonuses of up to “two-twelfths of their annualized salaries,” as determined by Brown and approved by the athletic director.

In the first season of his second stint at UNC, Brown helped the Tar Heels improve from two wins in 2018 to six in 2019.

The Tar Heels needed six wins to be invited to a bowl game, and did so on the final game of the regular season after beating N.C. State 41-10 on Nov. 30.

The Tar Heels will next play Temple (8-4) on Dec. 27 in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Md. at noon. The Tar Heels have lost their last three bowl games.

Their last victory was a 39-17 win against Cincinnati in 2013 in the Belk Bowl.
