High school sports, March 22: Hit parade sends Battery Creek softball past Academic Magnet

Alexis Ortiz struck out nine while giving up just one hit, adding one of three Battery Creek home runs Monday as the Dolphins hammered Academic Magnet 19-0 in a softball game called after five innings.

Emily Crosby and Journeigh Doray also homered for Battery Creek, which remained unbeaten in three region games. Ortiz, Doray and Jessica Shipley all produced four-hit games at the plate, while Crosby, Julianna Greer and Michaux Gee added three hits apiece.

Hanahan 8, Beaufort 0: Mary Claire Sumner, Savannah Mullen, Rebecca Heape and Lillian Sumner all went 1-for-3 for the Eagles, but couldn’t produce any runs against tough Hanahan pitching.

Mary Claire Sumner went the distance in the circle for Beaufort, giving up five earned runs.

BASEBALL

Wade Hampton 9, Battery Creek 7: Kyle Lanning rapped out three hits for the Dolphins, who found themselves undermined by eight errors in the contest.

Dallas Highuet and Matt Caton added two hits apiece for Battery Creek, with Highuet splitting time on the mount with Henry Schubert.

TENNIS

Beaufort 6, Whale Branch 0: Ian Hoogenboom’s 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jaion Mullen led a parade of wins for the Eagles, who saw only one player give up more than one game in a set.

Ben Straut saw the toughest path, beating Whale Branch’s Kevin Young 6-0, 6-3 in the No.1 match. Griffin Stone, Taylor McDaniel and Thomas Gnaan also scored singles wins for the Eagles, as did the doubles tandem of Chase Guyup/Brian Rhatigan.

Hilton Head Island 6, Hilton Head Christian 2: Tate Steinour, Alex Ittenbach, Sam Rothwell and Baruk Srivastava all won singles matches to propel the Seahawks.

Hilton Head Island (6-3) also got doubles wins from the tandems of Matt Tobin/Banks Reddy and Gabriel Matos/Christian Hopper. The Eagles got their points from singles victories by Davis Phillips and Cameron Clark.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island 15, Beaufort 1: Ella Patrick scored four goals and Anne Evans added three as the Seahawks controlled play against the young Eagles.

Nicole Reed and Carley Wilson added two goals each for Hilton Head Island, with other goals from Lauren Reed, Maybeth Salcedo, Alden Crout and Morgan Morgan.

Sara McMullen scored Beaufort’s lone goal, while goalkeeper Faith Crumley made 10 saves.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Bluffton 10, Effingham County 7: Blake Tredway scored five goals and Seth Eaton added two Monday as the Bobcats went on the road to avenge an earlier defeat.

Jack Bates added a goal and two assists for Bluffton (2-7), while Matt McComas had a goal and an assist. Jonny Luna scored the Bobcats’ remaining goal, and goalkeeper Owen Latchford made 12 saves.

BOYS’ SOCCER

John Paul II 2, Battery Creek 1: Josue Hurtado scored both goals as the Golden Warriors notched their third victory in their past four games.

Noah Brock assisted on one of Hurtado’s goals, while Craig Balerna made five saves for John Paul II (3-6).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Battery Creek 2, John Paul II 0: Gabbi Morales and Evelyn Schendler scored goals to propel the Dolphins, while Taylor Jones recorded the shutout in goal.

Frederica Academy 3, Hilton Head Prep 1: Charlotte Covington scored the lone goal for Prep.
