Sun City swimmers 5th in Myrtle Beach event
The Sun City Hilton Head United States Master Swimmers broke five state records in finishing fifth in the South Carolina State Short Course Yards Championships in North Myrtle Beach over the weekend.
Nana Whalen and Barbara Coughlin each won the high-point award for their age group. Whalen notched five firsts and five seconds, while Couglin won all nine of her events.
Those who finished in the top three in their events included:
▪ Anne Tullie, Joanne Stewart, Nana Whalen and Elayne Bartholomew, first place, women’s 65-and-over 200 Medley.
▪ Barbara Coughlin, first place, 100 IM, 200 back, 100 free and 200 free.
▪ Joanne Stewart, first place, 50 and 100 free, 50 and 100 back, 50, 100 and 200 breast.
▪ Elayne Bartholomew, first place, 200 free; second place, 500 free and 50 back; third place, 50 and 100 free.
▪ Marian Bastian, first place, 50 and 200 breaststrokes; third place, 100 breaststroke and 100 IM.
▪ Jim Bedient, first place, 50 breaststroke; second place, 100 breast and 200 breast; third place, 50 back and 100 IM.
▪ Tom Campagnola, second place, 50 free.
▪ Rose Carney, second place, five events.
▪ Gary Germeraad, first place, 1650 and 500 freestyle; third place, 50 free and 100 free.
▪ Pete Gordon, second place, 1650 free, 50 free and 500 free.
▪ Sandy Hineline, first place, 500 free and 200 free; one second place and three third places.
▪ Sheila Jemella, second place, 200 IM and 50 fly; third place, 100 IM and 200 breast.
▪ Caroline Kemerling, third place, 200 back.
▪ Craig McCall, third place, 100 and 200 breaststroke.
▪ Chet Richards, second place, 1650 free, 200 free and 500 free.
▪ Cynthia Smith, second place, 100 IM and 50 free; third place, 50 back and 50 fly.
▪ Ginny South, second place, 1650 freestyle.
▪ Anne Tullie, first place, 50 fly, 500 free, 50 free, 50 breast, 100 breast and 100 IM.
▪ Debra Walsh, Tom Bastian and Mike Farnham, relay legs that placed in top three.
