Andrew Cooke, Whirlwind win sailing's Island Packet Trophy
Andrew Cooke and his boat Whirlwind won the Island Packet Trophy over the weekend.
The Yacht Club of Hilton Head Island hosted the 46th Harbour Town Cup on Saturday, followed by the 45th Calibogue Cup on Sunday. The combined winner from those events is awarded the Island Packet Cup.
In 1985, The Island Packet donated the Island Packet Trophy for the fastest boat of the weekend. It goes to the boat with the best combined score from participation in both the Harbour Town Cup and the Calibogue Cup.
Both races utilize U.S. Sailing's PHRF guidelines.
PHRF is a system that provides a performance handicap rating for a particular boat based on its sailing characteristics including length, keel type, sail type and size, propeller type and other factors.
The handicap is expressed as seconds per nautical mile raced, so if one boat had a 100 PHRF and another a 150 PHRF, the first would be assessed a handicap of 50 seconds per mile raced.
The Island Packet Trophy was presented at a ceremony under the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town, the birthplace of the oldest sailing club on the Island.
