Anthony Edwards Gets Significant Upgrade Before Game 1 vs Spurs

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards was upgraded to questionable on the team’s injury report Sunday night, just one day before a Game 1 matchup against the San Antonio Spurs.

This upgrade indicates that Edwards is attempting to return as soon as possible in the Timberwolves’ second-round playoff series.

Edwards suffered a bone bruise after hyperextending his left knee during a Game 4 victory over the Denver Nuggets in Round 1. He missed the next two games, but his teammates were able to close out the series in six games and advance to the next round.

Initial reports suggested that Edwards would miss at least the first two games of the Timberwolves’ second-round series against the Spurs, but this upgrade could mean an earlier-than-expected return for the All-Star guard.

“Edwards, who has missed the last two games with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, has been cleared for on-court basketball activities,” the Timberwolves wrote in a release on Sunday. “He will be listed as questionable for Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs.”

Edwards posted a YouTube video on Sunday titled “Don’t count me out.”

"It's the playoffs," Edwards said in the video. "I'll go out on one leg if I have to."

Edwards is well known for his ability to play through pain and return from injuries quicker than the average player.

"We call him Wolverine. … Certain things you see other players might not be able to play through, those are injuries that Ant has been able to recover quickly from," Timberwolves vice president of medical operations and performance David Hines said.

The Timberwolves have a tall task ahead against Victor Wembanyama and the No. 2 seed Spurs, especially if Edwards is off the court. Minnesota is dealing with a variety of injury issues, including a season-ending Achilles tear for Donte DiVincenzo.

Game 1 will tip off at 9:30 p.m. ET on Monday.
