West Florence baseball has hit 19 home runs in 20 games. Find out why
FLORENCE, S.C. - Last week's spring break only had one day of baseball for West Florence - a Sunday practice.
Knights coach Josh Brown wasn't worried because his team did the same thing last year and reached the SCHSL 5A, D2 Lower State final.
This year? Once again, it didn't bother the Knights as they went 4-0 this week while hitting seven home runs. West hit three homers during Friday's 11-1 win at South Florence in five innings - James Arthur and Newt Hinson hit solo homers, and Chase Anderson's was a two-run blast.
Winning pitcher Owen Bex, meanwhile, struck out four batters during his four innings of work. In the bottom of the fourth, after South had runners on second and third with no outs and then loaded the bases with two outs, the Knights escaped - with Bex recording a strikeout to end the frame.
The Bruins' lone run was scored in the bottom of the fifth on Ben Tyner's RBI double.
West now has a home-and home against Westwood and then Spring Valley - and next, the postseason.
"We want to keep this going, especially as we get toward the end of the season and into the playoffs," Hinson said. "We've got a home-run park and that's good for us. Everybody on this team can hit it out at any moment of the game."
