With the high school football season in the final month of the regular season, it is time to take a look at where teams stack up in Class 4A and both divisions in Class 5A.

The MaxPreps RPI system is used to determine seeding, and in some instances who makes the playoffs for at-large berths. This is the second year the state of South Carolina is using the MaxPreps’ RPI system.

This year, the RPI is based 40% on your winning percentage, 30% on your opponents’ winning percentage and 30% on your opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage.

Using the RPI rankings, region champions will be seeded first in the playoffs followed by second-place finishers. The rest of the seeding will be based on RPI, but teams won’t be able to leap-frog other teams in their own region.

There will be 24 teams in each of the Class 5A Division I and II brackets. The top four seeds in the upper and lower state will get byes.

For the Class 4A playoffs, there will be 16 teams in the upper state and 16 in the lower state. With the use of RPI, there won’t be any predetermined home and away teams in the Class 4A and 5A playoff brackets, which most coaches are glad to see go away. The highest remaining seed will host. Because of the seeding criteria, region teams could face each other in the first round of the postseason.
