Find Christmas Magic and Holiday Shopping in Downtown Beaufort
In December, downtown Beaufort, South Carolina transforms into a truly magical place.
Twinkling lights line historic streets, waterfront breezes carry the scent of salt and celebration, and small businesses gear up for their busiest, most spirited season of the year.
As Linda Roper put it, “It just feels like Christmas whenever you walk downtown.” Roper, now downtown operations and community service director with the City of Beaufort, has a perspective rooted in a lifetime of local experience.
“I have worked for the City of Beaufort for about 37 years in different roles. I also was born and raised in Beaufort,” she said. “I remember Beaufort as a really small town, and so it’s nice to be a part of making it more vibrant and share what I think people come to see Beaufort for.”
As it turns out, people come to downtown Beaufort for a unique blend of history, waterfront beauty, and local holiday shopping that’s hard to replicate anywhere else in the Low Country — and makes for the perfect Christmas in Beaufort, South Carolina.
A Unique Holiday Atmosphere
One of Beaufort’s most distinguishing factors is its historic setting.
“Our downtown is located in Beaufort’s National Landmark District,” Roper said. “We have one of the largest landmark districts in the United States at 304 acres. So we’re full of history.”
Many of the area’s homes date back to the 1700s and 1800s, creating an atmosphere that exudes centuries-old charm. That history meets coastal serenity in the downtown Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, where visitors can catch a stunning sunset, admire the Palmettos, and, during the holidays, enjoy a 40-foot Christmas tree.
Park visitors who wander just north to Bay Street will run into plenty of shops they’ll only find in downtown Beaufort, SC, from restaurants to clothiers. All of these elements come together to create a holiday stroll that’s equal parts peaceful and festive, especially since many of the shops decorate their storefronts with holiday lights.
A Weekend of Celebrations
In Beaufort, SC, organized Christmas events run for a whole holiday weekend, spanning three days of excitement that draw visitors from all over the region. Here’s what to expect.
December 5: A Night on the Town
A Night on the Town is a great way to kick off the holiday season. This long-standing tradition celebrates the spirit of the community, showcasing live music, delicious food from local restaurants, and arts and crafts with Beaufort businesses and nonprofits.
“Our ‘A Night on the Town’ was once the time when all the locals came out to celebrate and the stores had customer appreciation days. All the locals would gather on the street, just as they do today,” Roper said.
Make sure to catch the tree lighting ceremony at the end of the night if you’d like to officially welcome the season to downtown Beaufort and see this year’s Christmas tree sparkle to life over Waterfront Park.
December 6: Gullah Taste of Christmas & Rice Cook-Off and Light Up the Night Boat Parade
During the day, Waterfront Park will host the Gullah Taste of Christmas & Rice Cook-Off and Festival, a celebration of culture, food, and community.
That evening, visitors can settle down along the waterfront to watch the Light Up the Night Boat Parade, which will feature boats covered in festive lights and holiday decorations sailing the waterway.
December 7: Christmas Parade
Bring your whole family downtown and get ready to welcome Santa Claus himself to Beaufort with live marching bands and festively decorated floats.
Roper said the Christmas parade is one of her favorite local memories. “It just feels like Christmas when the parade and Santa come to town,” she said.
Small Shops, Big Finds
Holiday shopping in Beaufort, South Carolina isn’t about long lines or big-box sameness — it’s about discovery and connection.
“These are our friends and neighbors that own businesses,” Roper said. “They’re all small…they have unique items. They have great gifts.”
Some of lesser-known shops Roper recommended include:
- Beverly’s Off Bay and Sunshine & Sass: Two unique women’s clothing boutiques
- Hop Dog: A fun hot dog and beer spot perfect for a little snack break between shops
- Nevermore Books: An eclectic bookstore that makes you feel like you’re stepping into an enchanted story

Along with these lesser-known shops and Beaufort staples, Roper said there’s a new addition: Sweetgrass Pantry & Provisions on West Street, which is the perfect place to treat yourself after a full day of holiday shopping.
Why Holiday Shopping in Downtown Beaufort Matters
Shopping in Beaufort isn’t just festive — it’s impactful.
“It keeps all of the money spent in stores and restaurants in our own local economy,” Roper said.
Tourism also plays a major supporting role in Beaufort’s economy. A vibrant downtown attracts visitors, who in turn support shops, restaurants, and local tours.
Making Holiday Visits Easy
Worried about parking? Don’t be.
This year, Beaufort is launching daily holiday shuttles, running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with extra shuttles running on the nights of December 5 and 6.
“I hear people all day long say that [they] don’t come downtown because there’s nowhere to park,” Roper said. “But we have plenty of parking…and I think this shuttle is going to add another element to help people.”
Visitors and residents can take advantage of a number of free parking options by visiting the Park Beaufort office (where they’ll receive two tokens for one hour of free parking) or using the Park Mobile app (which will get them two hours of free parking).
Plan Your Holiday Visit
Roper’s advice for first-time shoppers is simple: “Just come down and explore.”
Weekdays, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays, are quieter in downtown Beaufort, but every day is welcoming. Once you’ve discovered Beaufort during the holidays, chances are that your visits will become a valued tradition.
“I always take my family to downtown…for the past probably 10 years I buy the majority of my gifts from downtown,” Roper said. “I like to support my hometown businesses.”
