Rants & Raves: Hiring decision hits the fan
Readers react to the story, "Superintendent changed nepotism rule: Questions arise following wife's hire for new position":
School board must address this. This is not RIGHT. #stopsuperintendentmoss Alicia Mullaney
Huh. School board, hello?!!! Anyone paying attention?Paula Panepinto Tilley
They are superior people ... I know them both. We're fortunate to have their services and time for our community and children. They've done a fabulous job offering school choice and with River Ridge Academy ... and much more. Renee Black
How convenient. Doesn't remember? Right ... Terri Leonard Philpot
This guy must have a bad memory and a communication problem. Gee honey, I had absolutely no idea that you were going to apply for a newly created 100k per year job that I must have just changed the rules so you can apply for but I really don't remember when I did it and there will be no comment from either of us and hopefully the issue will go away. Sounds very Cosbyish to me. Steve Likins
Hmmmmmmmm ... the fox is in the henhouse. Cathy Merck Tyson
Corruption at its finest... Jeremy Howard
This type of bureaucratic (stuff) goes on all the time at the administrative level of the Beaufort County School District; most of it is just never reported. Employee morale suffers because of it. I'd like to see The Island Packet write a story on other factors contributing to the high rate of employee turnover, not just take Moss' word that cost of living is the primary one. What are the results of exit interviews? Sandy Guhl
To the story, "Amid outrage, most board members silent on hiring of superintendent's wife":
In my work experience, if a policy/procedure was changed or altered in any way, it required that the date be changed and it was signed by the person responsible. Additionally, the change was recorded in the meeting minutes of the particular committee involved. It is difficult to understand why our school board does not do this. Apparently no one "remembers" when the change in policy occurred. In MY opinion, this is just NOT acceptable. Somebody needs answer to this, or we just need to start over with a whole new superintendent and board who CAN be accountable to us. Lottie Shynkarek Phinney
It really amazes me that people still think this could be OK. Sara Panzarella
This is shocking to us! We need to address this issue, immediately. Mr. Moss changed the rule so his wife could be hired. If anything it is collusion on the part of Mr. Moss and his wife to enrich themselves. He didn't know she was applying for the position???? Conflict of interest to be sure. He should resign. Mrs. Moss also should resign. Kathleen McDonald
I'm not saying she is not the best person for the job, but this just does not feel right to me. ... The person she reports to, reports directly to Moss? And if she doesn't do a good job? Is her supervisor REALLY gonna be OK with going to him and reporting negatively on the guy's wife? I'm just not comfortable with this. Judy Tankoos
To the story "Beaufort County Council endorses sterilization rules for local pit bulls":
Overall I think this is a good idea. An even better idea would be to make mandatory spay/neuter of all cats and dogs and regulating breeders more.Bob Cronk
It's because of efforts like this one that we have been able to reduce euthanasia by roughly 60 percent over the past five years. Rick Caporale
