Rants & Raves: Rules for tents on Hilton Head beaches
Readers react to the possibility that new rules could be created for tents on Hilton Head Island beaches.
Pretty soon all we will be able to do is go to the beach and only sit under a shore beach umbrella and chair. Oh -- and pay a fortune for it.
Karen Julian Smith
One more rule. Let's enjoy the beach. It is where we go to get away.
Edward Sueta
North Myrtle Beach doesn't allow them anymore. Everyone thought it was so crazy, but we like it so much better without them. We set up tents for 10 years there, and it only took one year to get used to umbrellas only. Way better without tents.
William James
No way I can go to the beach during the day without my tent. But as a resident, I clean up my spot and take my tent home. Make rules for the summer and the tourists who don't care about our beaches, but don't go messing with us locals.

More importantly, what can be done about littering in general? More signs? Stricter enforcement of laws already in place? As a resident, it's incredibly frustrating to see our beaches trashed. I think the amount of broken children's toys left behind is the most surprising. I take my dog to Folly Field most evenings and do my best to pick up what I can. But I'd much rather have a nice relaxing walk on the beach. It's my therapy! And picking up after people is ruining it.

Fine those who are leaving them -- it's littering. By banning tents you are excluding some people from enjoying the beach -- young children, etc., and the sun protection prevents skin cancer. If you bring a tent, umbrella or kite you should take responsibility for making sure it doesn't knock someone out. Common sense.

I was on the beach a few months back, and someone left their huge umbrella unattended. It got caught in the wind and almost landed pole side down on my newborn. A man beside us dove and caught it just in time. Not a fan of umbrellas and tents like those.
Brittney Sell
As a resident, I agree with all rules and regulations, but as a former tourist, don't bother writing a "Rules and Regulations" book. No one will read it. Now, if you put it a small six-panel pamphlet that is very concise, I feel it could be read.
