David’s World: Vietnam Veterans Day Tuesday

Thanks to the note from Bonnie Wade Mucia of Bluffton, who says Tuesday, March 29, is Vietnam Veterans Day.

Bonnie organized the Dear Vietnam Vet nonprofit organization to say “thank you” to all Vietnam veterans.

Town councils in Beaufort and Bluffton have proclaimed Tuesday to be Vietnam Veterans Day. The date marks the final withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam in 1973. It is also the date President Nixon chose for the first Vietnam Veterans Day in 1974.

Lowe’s in Bluffton will be dedicating a “Combat Wounded” reserved parking space with lines painted purple for combat wounded customers. The sign at the parking space was donated by the Jimmie Leach Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter and the Emily Geiger chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Lowe’s has invited all veterans who work at the store to attend the 10 a.m. ceremony, Bonnie said.

“We also have more signs going up in Beaufort County,” she said.

On Tuesday night, Cheeburger Cheeburger in Bluffton is doing a fundraiser for the Dear Vietnam Vet scholarship program. The first 10 Vietnam vets who come that night will get a $10 credit toward their meals, Bonnie Wade Mucia said.

“We will also be giving thank-you letters to Vietnam veterans who attend, and also have blank cards for customers who would like to write a ‘thank-you’ card to a Vietnam vet,” she said.
