I appreciate Rob Saye sharing photos from the David Wingo benefit held Sept. 15 at the Rooftop Bar at Poseidon on Hilton Head Island.

Musicians and friends raised more than $35,000 to help Wingo with expenses associated with his surgery the next morning to replace five vertebrae.

Brian Goode, who organized the event along with Shannon Tanner, said the surgery was successful.

Shannon Tanner's Oyster Reefer Band held down the stage at the benefit as other musicians, including Earl Williams, took a turn performing for a crowd of about 450.

"It was a joyous reunion of people who have loved Hilton Head and David for a long time," Goode said.

Wingo, who has played music on Hilton Head for 40 years, is up and about, recuperating at home. Wingo performed for many years at the Quarterdeck at the Harbour Town Lighthouse.

Sheri Davis was manager of the event, which included a silent auction. And that was Nellie Adam on roller skates selling prize tickets.
