Letter: Media coverage of Trump unjustified

The media coverage of Donald Trump is disgraceful.

He is a person who is arguably mentally ill; has demonstrated his racist, homophobic, misogynistic, xenophobic, fascist tendencies; and is reported on minute by minute of every day as though he is a legitimate presidential nominee of the Republican Party. There is no legitimate Republican Party nominee.

There is no legitimate Republican Party as an historically accurate entity. There is the party of extremism. There is the party of hate. There is the party of division. There is the party of fear. There is the party of tea. But there is no party of Abraham Lincoln. There is no party of Theodore Roosevelt. There is no party of Dwight David Eisenhower.

The media, this newspaper included, continue to cover Trump’s follies as though they were somehow normal campaign activities. They are not. They are the rantings and ravings of a madman — rantings and ravings that are being blindly supported by an uneducated, inhumane group of bigots. His words sell “soap” and that’s all the media is concerned with. Selling.

Gone is the Fourth Estate of the past. We can no longer rely on journalism to take up the cause of sanity, truth and fairness when reporting on political matters. Soap is what we get. Soap.
