Letter: RNC coverage unfair to Trump

Your coverage of the Republican National Convention clearly showed an anti-Trump position. Negative aspects were covered; positives, omitted.

The scurrilous editorial cartoon on July 21, portraying Melania Trump as a “dummy” with a how-to book on plagiarizing, stimulated this reply.

On July 20, you acknowledged Donald Trump has a shot at redefining himself, but indicated some GOP politicians are looking ahead to 2020, suggesting they are conceding this year. Your editorial page had a snarky cartoon denigrating the convention. An AP piece ignored the meat of Donald Trump Jr.’s excellent speech, except that he said, “Dad, I love you.”

On July 21, David Brooks, your favorite New York Times intellectual, again painted Trump in hifalutin negatives as an awful candidate who might win in spite of himself — indicating he’s somewhat worried.

You turned up the heat on July 22 with a front-page AP article magnifying Trump’s “daunting array of challenges” including Melania Trump’s “plagiarism charge,” panning the “unusually harsh criticism of (Hillary) Clinton,” and enjoying Sen. Ted Cruz’s non-endorsement. Ivanka Trump was given due credit for an effective speech, but the fact that three Trump children spoke brilliantly was ignored, along with their obvious fine upbringing. Another AP piece condemned Gov. Chris Christie’s mock trial and conviction of Hillary.

On July 23, a Washington Post editorial gave reasons why more than half our population is justifiably troubled by the Obama years’ trend, but concluded that a Trump presidency would be wrong at worst, ineffective at best.
