Letter: On environment, get involved, be aware

In reading in your newspaper about sewage and toxic algae in Florida, to me it is a prefect example of politics. One side blames pollution, the other side blames over-flooding a reservoir. Finger pointing till things blow over or diversion tactics seems the norm. Then people get involved over who’s to blame.

Now, instead of fixing the problem and working together to resolve the situation, this is what they do. There is a difference between negligence and accidents. Whatever goes on your skin, goes into your body. Not just drinking. It can include eating toxic fish, or breathing toxic air. When they spray insecticide on your lawn, where does the residue go after the insects are dead? What’s happening in China effects us all. Unless, of course, you think China is another planet.

Fumes from jets flying overhead, auto emissions and combustible engines emit gases that we all breathe. I’m not running around saying the sky is falling, I’m just trying to make everyone aware of our environment.

I went on a recent visit to USC in Columbia to do research on child obesity. I said that fast food was the culprit. The professor responded with, “You can’t fight City Hall.” I think we all need some common sense as to what is causing all these problems, rather then listening to these so-called experts. Just get involved a little.
