Letter: Get out of the Middle East; we can’t fix it
Following President Obama’s signature foreign policy achievement, the Arab Spring, let’s examine how far we have come in the Mideast situation.
Turkey, a NATO member and U.S. ally, is at war with the Kurdish Working Party (PKK). The Kurds, who the U.S. supports, are our allies against ISIS. ISIS is at war with Iraq, Syria, the U.S. and the West. Iran, a self-declared enemy of the U.S., is actively aiding Iraq in its war against ISIS. Obama abandoned Iraq, our ally(?).
Syria is engaged in civil war, fighting both rebels and ISIS, with the aid of Russia, which claims to be fighting ISIS, but is really fighting Assad’s rebels. Is Syria a U.S. ally?
Oh, let’s not forget the mess that is Egypt today. Didn’t President Obama support the overthrow of this U.S. and Israeli allied country, which elected Mohamed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, as its president. Hillary Clinton praised President Morsi in the highest terms. Where is he today?
OK everyone, breathe.
And more. In Afghanistan, the Taliban are making a comeback in the wake of the U.S. reduction in presence. Great. What does this mean to the girls and women in that country? No school, slavery, rape and honor killings will return in full force.
Does the U.S. need to spill any more of our precious blood in this geopolitical morass? I think not. Get our personnel out. Stop any and all bombing. Give no one any “foreign aid” (money). We can’t fix this.
