Letters: Keep 18-wheelers off the bridge

I just want to say kudos to the Beaufort City Police for stopping an 18-wheeler from going over the Woods Bridge last week.

I didn’t even mind sitting in traffic for the extra 15 minutes or so it took them to get cars out of the way so that the truck could back up on Carteret Street and make a right turn on Bay Street.

There is a reason these trucks are not supposed to go over that bridge and it is posted clearly coming from both directions, yet they still lumber along. The other day I passed one loaded down with concrete blocks.

Now that tomato packing season is here I’m sure this traffic will only increase and I certainly hope that the management of the packing houses on the island are informing these drivers that they are not to cross the Woods Bridge with their heavy loads.

I don’t mind playing the role of the troll here … “18-wheelers, stay off of my bridge!”
