Letter: Quick mental check could be a life saver

I learned early in my fire service career the importance of having multiple exits in occupancies that crowd the public together. Most businesses that serve the public are required to have at least one additional exit located opposite from the one you enter. Typically, the larger the size of the venue the more additional exits are required to ensure safe passage in the event of an emergency — any emergency.

The ability to exit a night club, restaurant or movie theater during a life-threatening incident can make a difference to your survival. Once again, this issue came into question with the recent nightclub horror in Orlando. Emergency exits should be clearly marked, free of obstructions, including any additional locks on the door that may be intended to provide added building security — but instead create a life hazard for the occupant.

The point to all of this is that we have a right and personal obligation to ensure that the buildings we visit are safe and in compliance with state and local safety codes. When you walk into an establishment, look around and be aware. Is there adequate emergency lighting and exit signs? Where are the exit doors located? And are they free of any locks or obstructions? This simple and quick mental exercise could save your life or someone you love.

Don’t take it for granted. If you see something wrong, say something. If that fails, call the local fire department and inform them of the problem.
