Letter: Zoo made right call on gorilla incident
David Lauderdale's column regarding the "gorilla or kid" was right on because it dealt with the decision that the zoo management had to make in a matter of minutes. He maintained that the zoo made the right decision in having the gorilla killed who was slinging the young boy around "like a rag doll."
I wonder if a recent letter writer who criticized the decision has children. And if so, it's hard to believe she would write her letter questioning the zoo's decision to kill the gorilla before something very tragic could have happened to the boy. She mentioned a few scenarios concerning the zoo keeper and zoo veterinarian. The reality is there was simply no time to engage them if you saw any of the video. In fact, I'm astounded as to how much publicity this story got all over the country. Other than someone starved for a "news event," who in their right mind would not have killed the gorilla?
Even Jack Hanna, the world's foremost zoo keeper and lover of animals was fully supportive of the zoo's action. So, please, visit another zoo and appreciate how majestic the gorillas are, how well cared for they are and how much pleasure they add to your zoo visit. Please let's end this story here and now.
