Letter: SC school funding unsustainable

A recent letter writer claimed full-time residents pay their fair share of school taxes because they pay a 1 percent sales tax to fund school operations.

I just sold a property I had been renting to someone who became a resident homeowner.

I paid property taxes as a landlord of $1,541. The new owner, a year later, pays only $621.

The letter writer would have to spend nearly $100,000 a year on goods that are fully subject to sales tax in order to make an equivalent contribution to school operations.

The letter writer also suggests non-resident property owners stop bellyaching and just move down here and become full-time residents.

Isn’t this what’s creating the problem? People are tired of unfair taxation and get rid of investment properties. Since the schools are funded in an unsustainable manner, the problem gets worse.
