Letter: Why mess with the mayhem on Hilton Head roads?
You’ve printed many letters citing unsafe roadways and reckless driving. Undoubtedly, these complaints are from “whiners” who drive cautiously and dutifully obey all traffic regulations. Ironically, they are the ones causing the problems. Their robotic driving slows everyone down and spoils the fun of driving on Hilton Head Island.
It’s time to make our roads great again. Our elected officials should remove all traffic signs, abolish speed limits, and eliminate any impediments to making U-turns and left-hand turns across two lanes of traffic anywhere, anytime. This plan would speed things up and eliminate the cost of law enforcement.
A version of my plan has already been implemented on Greenwood Drive between Sea Pines Circle and the Sea Pines gate. Although the traffic signs remain, officials have suspended the enforcement of all traffic regulations and speed bumps have been removed. Drivers may now navigate the quarter-mile strip at whatever speed suits them and are provided 10 opportunities to make left-hand turns across multiple lanes in order to patronize any of the 18 bars in the immediate area.
The thrill level of driving in this area has improved dramatically. You may recognize this roadway in the new video game “Car-mageddon, HHI.”
Recently, there have been rumblings about adding law enforcement officers in an attempt to restrict the free-for-all we currently enjoy on our roads. Never forget, thousands of families visit our island each year seeking fun and excitement, not law and order.
Our politicians should continue to ignore the demands of these “10 and 2” whiners.
