Letter: Mainland better place for arts center
I’ve been reading about the proposed new arts center for Hilton Head Island. If this outrageous idea goes forward, it should be placed somewhere on the mainland where there seems to be a greater availability of land.
To get to an event on our beautiful island, the vast majority of the traffic must travel east, thereby clogging U.S. 278 beyond belief. After the event, the same traffic will, by necessity, clog U.S. 278 going west. On the mainland, all the traffic can disperse in all four directions with much less chance of clogging roads.
My wife and I have moved to Hilton Head from Long Island. We lived in a small hamlet with easy traveling. However, over time, what used to be a 10-minute drive to the nearest highway became a 40-minute drive, due to all the building that the developers and politicians insisted the residents needed to attract tourists, help the economy, provide jobs, etc., etc. Let’s not have this same fate occur on Hilton Head.
