Letter: SC school taxation killing the golden goose
My husband and I are among the property owners who pay the 6 percent tax rate. This is such an unfair assessment that we are at the point we may sell our second property. The first was sold two years ago.
I still cannot comprehend how any state thinks that its own residents should not pay for their own public school operations. I don’t think it is “unfortunate,” as the Beaufort County School District chief finance and operations officer stated. I think it is criminal that business owners and the rest of us 6 percent taxpayers are responsible for the schools when we don’t have children in the Beaufort County School District.
Don’t be surprised if the future provides even less tax income if Act 388 is kept in place.
We are definitely discouraging anyone we know from buying a second home or rental property on Hilton Head. The golden goose may be laying its last golden egg.
If you don’t think this will hurt your economy in more than just the schools, think again.
What about the entire real estate industry?
