Letter: No to development at Honey Horn
A sad story: Those in favor of building a Hilton Head Island art center on the most beautiful, unspoiled piece of land should read the story of the Mirabel International Airport in Quebec, north of Montreal. It’s a white elephant that has consumed hundreds of millions of tax dollars and cut short the lives of many farmers who lost their livelihood and committed suicide.
Here is my story: I purchased a seasonal home on the island because of the harmony of nature and man interacting together for the best. It is something special I could not find in big cities. In the last few years, however, I see development taking away from the contentment and well-being I felt in the past each time I would cross the bridge and “come home” to the island.
Now, are we really going to thrash the Honey Horn Plantation and install acres of asphalt, pipes, wires everywhere, a building, an outdoor facility, manicured landscape, etc.? It’s absurd and unthinkable, really.
Have we forgotten that Hilton Head’s population is of retired folks for the most part who, like me, prefer a peaceful walk or bike ride in the nature instead of Broadway productions and horrendous traffic jams? By all means, leave the Honey Horn nature haven alone.
