Letter: How to force independent chamber audit

An easy solution to the evasion of an audit by the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce: Stop funding the chamber until an independent audit is completed showing no operational and/or expenditure discrepancies.

Why would anyone keep giving money to an entity that refuses to tell where that money is going? If the Town Council fails to force the chamber into an audit, and the tax money is allocated, you might want to look at the potential corruption of the members of the Council who pass on tax dollars to an organization that feels it’s above transparency.

You hide nothing if you have nothing to hide. The Chamber of Commerce does nothing to warrant the money it receives. Hilton Head Island draws people by word of mouth and the experience of the island’s annual visitors. Stop the money and see what happens.
