Letter: Sales taxes: Where does it all stop?

First, a small but vocal minority pushing for a new arts center on Hilton Head Island has suggested an additional sales tax be assessed on everyone so they can have a more fitting arts center.

This new center will probably not draw more people to it than our current theater does, but somehow they have got it in their heads that bigger automatically means more and better.

The danger is that our local government will become obligated to absorb any and all cost overruns and operating losses that might occur, which translates into higher taxes. The notion that all of us become obligated to pay for the wants of a few just doesn’t sit well.

Next, our school board is proposing an additional sales tax to fund capital expenditures. Where does this all stop? I guess when the combined sales taxes exceed the cost of our purchases.
