Letter: A glimpse at football’s future
Who will be the next athlete to donate his or her brain to science for concussion studies?
It will take them a while to realize this, but in the future we will be watching football with players wearing large helmets that make them look like astronauts. The game of football will still be good and we will get used to it.
Increasing the helmet diameter by about 4 inches would give the energy management engineers a lot of room to get the brain accelerations down within safe limits. It’s basic physics, and I don’t understand why they have not done this.
I understand that they have been playing with helmets that have an indicator on them that will show when the helmet has experienced a dangerous acceleration. My goodness, this will be expensive, and it will show, after the fact, that the player may have a problem.
I have preached this for about two years, so now I’m to the point of just predicting it.
