Letter: School board deserves award
Each year, Time magazine commentator Joe Klein gives “Teddy Awards” to people in an influential position who, without great fanfare or loud proclamations, work courageously and steadily for goals that benefit people greatly.
I would like to present this award locally to the members of the Beaufort County Board of Education, who, despite the loud noise of naysayers, including the newspaper, have kept in their minds the goals set forth when they hired Jeff Moss to be our superintendent.
They vetted him with care and offered him a lucrative contract that protected his job, knowing that his position has always been a lightning rod for attack by parents, staff, board members, taxpayers, and angry citizens. His position, like that of all heads of large organizations, exposes him to constant scrutiny.
These board members not only watched to see that Moss is directing his work toward the goals they set out for him, but also remembered why their constituents elected them.
Their voters know them and have confidence that they have their best interests at heart and will always make decisions that promote the education of their children to the highest standards they can achieve. They believe that their board member knows more than they about Moss’ talents and good work.
