Letter: Arts center makes no sense

Hilton Head Island Town Council seems to come up with ways to spend taxpayer money, and not all make sense. The proposed arts center is one of those that makes no sense — a potential black hole for taxpayer dollars.

The arts center we now have is not self-supporting and needs taxpayer dollars. Would a bigger, greater replacement be self-supporting? I believe not. More taxpayer support would be needed every year.

Town Council envisions spending $30 million, but cannot keep the roads in town free of potholes. Think the intersection of New Orleans Road and Pope Avenue or Cordillo Parkway. Potholes are not fixed for months, or never.

I believe spending for a new arts center should be a question for a referendum before Town Council supports it.
