Letter: Delay the beach project

I was astounded to watch the Hilton Head Island Town Council, which I generally have high praise for, discuss the upcoming beach renourishment project that is planned for our island.

After the contractor did not show up on time, the Council gave it two more options, one of which will impact the South Beach area.

The local experts explained the serious impact that this was going to have on businesses, landlords, future vacation planners and wedding destinations, not to mention the loggerhead turtle nests. The Council could not come to the decision to delay the project even though many will be hurt.

Council comments included that they would “think about it” and that “little boys would love watching the construction” and that “sand bridges would be built over the pipes.”

Maybe signs could be put up directing the nesting loggerhead turtles to the nearest sand bridge.

Come on, elected officials, don’t give paradise a black eye.
