Letter: Why term limits will never happen

As much as I agree with a recent letter suggesting that we need term limits for all elected officials, sad to say I can’t see such an improvement ever coming to pass in my lifetime.

Originally, the idea of Congress was to create a political system where the average citizen could serve his or her country for a period of two years then return to normal life, having made a singular contribution to the development and growth of America. This was by any standards a progressive idea that had not been tried in any other civilized society.

However, as time passed this developed in to a regular job with a full-time staff, etc. The whole idea of utilizing the ideas and contributions of ordinary citizens seems to have fallen by the wayside to be replaced by full-time, professional representatives, whose day-to-day contact with reality is at best limited.

As long as elected professionals hold the reigns, term limits will never happen. Who would put themselves out of a cozy job to return to the reality of earning a daily living?

As for the prospect of a real Congressional Convention to correct this self-serving policy, all I can say is dream on.
